    NEW MASTER ELECTED

Upper Warden Noel Osborne was elected Master of the Worshipful Company of Stationers and Newspaper Makers on 1 July and installed with traditional ceremony in the Great Hall, to the acclaim of the assembled Liverymen and Freemen.

After taking the oath, and badged and gowned, the new Master paid tribute to his predecessor, John Waterlow, for presiding over the Company for the past year “with such style, good humour, unflappability, patience – and sheer hard work.”

Looking forward to his own term, Noel Osborne said his priority would be to raise funds for the newly amalgamated Stationers’ Foundation.  “The focus of the campaign will be on literacy (or rather illiteracy) in inner London schools,” he declared.  The campaign would be inspired and promoted by some of the best young musicians in the world.  A major event would also be held to raise funds for the Royal Marines, he said, recognising the close ties that exist with the Company.

Other officers elected on 1 July were Richard Brewster, Upper Warden, and Christopher McKane, Under Warden.

After the installation ceremony, the Common Hall assembly adjourned to the newly refurbished garden where guests enjoyed refreshments amid the flower beds on a fine summer’s evening.

    FINANCIAL REPORT

In a report submitted to Common Hall, Treasurer Clifford Jakes announced that the financial year ended 31 December 2007 had shown an increased operating surplus of £115,736 compared with £94,710 in 2006.  “This is an excellent result and continues the profitable trend of recent years,” the report said.

Despite this, the Treasurer warned that the Company was facing new challenges due to the current economic climate, reflected in reduced Hall lettings, and called for vigilance in monitoring costs.

     DEVELOPMENT DIRECTOR

The Stationers’ Company is seeking to appoint a Development Director whose tasks will include building close working relationships with key industry associations and institutions, promoting corporate membership and industry PR activities and, above all, positioning the Company as the ultimate forum for its industries.

The successful candidate is likely to be a graduate with a proven track record in one of the Company’s industry sectors.  Please click here for details.

STATIONERS’ BURSARY BLAZES NEW MEDIA TRAIL

Sarah Bromley, winner of a Stationers’ bursary, has graduated with a Master’s degree in Electronic Publishing from City University, an award that reflects the Company’s interest in the new digital media.

Speaking at the University’s Degree Congregation at Southwark Cathedral on May 21, Sarah said: “The purpose of the bursary was to aid in the development of new skills that can help take the traditional publishing industry into the electronic era.”

She had chosen online language learning for her dissertation project because it combined her first degree in Linguistics with the new discipline of web publishing, she said.

Sarah thanked Kevin Dewey, Chairman of Trustees of the Stationers’ Foundation, for the bursary, which she described as “a huge help”.  Court Assistant Dewey said Sarah’s success “demonstrates the virtuous circle we are trying to achieve through the work of the Stationers’ Foundation.”

Sarah is now working as Web Editor for a large educational publisher.

DAUGHTER’S CHARITY RUN IN MEMORY OF LATE LIVERYMAN

Philippa Andrews, daughter of the late Richard (Dick) Dickinson, Liveryman, is calling for support from the Livery for a charity run in memory of her father.
Not just any charity run: Philippa is taking part in the world’s biggest half marathon, the BUPA Great North Run on 5th October 2008 (yes, it’s over 13 miles!).

Anyone who would like to sponsor her to raise funds for Beating Bowel Cancer UK should, please, visit www.justgiving.com/rugbygirlsgorunning Phillipa can also be contacted on Pip.andrews@tiscali.co.uk or by telephone: 07956 988 785 / 01727 850960

Dick worked for the Finnish Paper and Board Industry for 40 years and was Managing Director of Varma Services in the UK and, more recently, Managing Director of M-real UK Ltd.  He retired in 2006.

The Finnish Government honoured him with the award of Knight First Class of the Order of the Lion of Finland.  His investiture took place at the Finnish Embassy residence in London exactly a week before his death.

Dick, who was 61, had been struggling with cancer for the previous several months.  He died surrounded by his family last November.

YOUNG ‘JOURNALISTS FOR A DAY’ ON THE MOVE

The Newspaper Education Trust, one of the Stationers’ adopted good causes, is moving to bigger and better premises this summer,  including a new media studio for young would-be producers to generate their own TV news broadcasts.

The Trust will still be based at West Ferry Printers in London, but it will be expanding into larger premises, thanks to support from the City Fringe Partnership and the London Development Agency.  The Stationers’ Company has given funding to the project for newsroom equipment.

Since the project started in 1995, nearly 25,000 young people have experienced being a journalist for a day, writing and designing their own newspaper frontpage.   Now some of them are taking up journalism as a career.
