The type designer Matthew Carter once stated that typography is a beautiful group of letters, not a group of beautiful letters. The typeface can be a starting point of a project and a good designer will not only be judicious in their choice of face but how they apply it. Alongside aesthetics, typography can create a brand, enhance a signage system, or help a website appear consistently across browsers and languages. Typography is not an exact science and there exists a wide variety of opinions as to the merits or otherwise of particular typefaces - many of us have favourite, and least favourite, typefaces. As technology changes, so does the way typefaces are created and used - the added complexity of an international branding project draws special challenges to the designer.
Our three speakers will talk about aspects of modern typography and its relationship with branding, wayfinding and type on the web. They are all designers and highly experienced within their fields Speakers will include:
Luisa Baeta has worked internationally as a graphic designer and is currently based in New York. Her background is in type design and she has worked in a variety of studios. She now works predominantly within branding.
Freeman Richard Chapman runs his own design studio in west London specialising in branding and web design for clients of all sizes across a wide variety of industries, in the UK and internationally.
David Livingston has worked as a designer in a variety of sectors and roles within branding, promotion and publishing. One of his most recent roles has been as a wayfinding designer within the transport sector.
