In keeping with the tradition which has been running for over a decade, Stationers partook of the Inter Livery Ski Championship in Mayrhofen, Austria. The team of three this year included Court Assistant Nick Mockett, Associate Liveryman Adam Anderson from Go-Pak and Liveryman Quentin Hunter.
This was a change of venue from Morzine, France, but had been expertly handled by the Ironmongers and the event was at capacity. The Championship is a two-day event involving a qualifying parallel slalom, on Thursday (this year with the option to run twice) to establish starting positions for the grand slalom on Friday. This year, Stationers had inadvertently followed the suit of a number of other Livery Companies as we had a qualified ski instructor on the team. No prizes for guessing who was the most competitive Stationer! Congratulations to Quentin Hunter on completing in a mere 43.17 seconds. As usual, most of the top places went to the Campbell clan of Coopers but there was a major upset in the final when last year’s winner set off from pole position (boom-boom) and wiped out at gate 3, due to the aggressive start. Anxiety was also heightened as the Austrian Olympic skier, who had set the course, failed to make it through a gate on the grand slalom!
Fortunately, skiing Stationers all returned in one piece, suitably fed and watered to (ski) boot. Finally, the much-coveted Stationers’ prize (a teddy bear) for the fastest team (of three) with a combined age of over 200 went to the Grocers.
