Liveryman Lord Hague (William) - newly elected Chancellor of Oxford University

Liveryman Tim Connell (Queen's 1968) writes -
 
In a stiff field of 38 candidates, Liveryman Lord Hague (William) has been elected as the 160th Chancellor of Oxford University, with over 50% of the vote in the second round. He is a strong Oxford man, having studied the classic politician's degree of Politics, Philosophy and Economics at Magdalen College and been President of the Oxford Union. He was also heavily involved in the Campaign for Oxford in the late 1980s, which began the perennial task of fundraising. Williams' wife Ffion is also an Oxford graduate, having studied English at Jesus College.

I joined the Imperial War Museum London in 1972 as a Library Assistant. Back in 1968 there had been a major fire in the library reading room and as a result there was a large amount of material that required conversation. Consequently, I was sent to the India Office, the leading light in paper conservation at the time and lucky enough to work with Fred Marsh and his team and then use my acquired skills in paper conservation and repair, encapsulation and primary book binding at the museum.

I was born in Derby, went to the local grammar school and then Cambridge University where I studied Russian and French. My first job after university was in publishing – writing and editing a Russian-teaching magazine – which led to a prolonged stay in the Soviet Union (as then was) in the cold-war depths of 1970.
