St Ceciliatide is always a big occasion for Stationers. There is a beautiful stained-glass window in honour of the patron saint of music in the Hall and every year, the company arranges a weekend of concerts in November to mark her day.

I joined the Imperial War Museum London in 1972 as a Library Assistant. Back in 1968 there had been a major fire in the library reading room and as a result there was a large amount of material that required conversation. Consequently, I was sent to the India Office, the leading light in paper conservation at the time and lucky enough to work with Fred Marsh and his team and then use my acquired skills in paper conservation and repair, encapsulation and primary book binding at the museum.

I was born in Derby, went to the local grammar school and then Cambridge University where I studied Russian and French. My first job after university was in publishing – writing and editing a Russian-teaching magazine – which led to a prolonged stay in the Soviet Union (as then was) in the cold-war depths of 1970.

The Civic Dinner was the principal event of the year, at which the Company celebrated its links with the Mayoralty and the City. The Company invited Civic dignitaries and their spouses to last night's dinner, including the Right Honourable The Lord Mayor of London and the Sheriffs.

Having been brought up in Scotland and then Colchester, Richard graduated from Loughborough University in 1982 with a degree in Chemical Engineering and Management Studies. He found his way into the printing and packaging industry via Chapman Envelopes and spent some 13 years in various roles in the UK and Belgium with Field Group Plc.
