New Journal Publishing Solutions Alliance Expands Options for Nonprofits

Scholarly organizations seeking to develop or enhance independent journal publishing programs now have access to coordinated software and services through Allied Journal Publishing Solutions, an alliance between The Scholarly Publishing Collective (SPC), Scholastica, and Westchester Publishing Services. The alliance specifically supports nonprofit publishers, including scholarly societies and university presses.

Allied Journal Publishing Solutions gives publishers a flexible, integrated way to manage the full journal publishing workflow, with editorial management, production, hosting, sales, and fulfillment solutions from three trusted partners.

Available offerings include:

● Powerful and intuitive peer review software from Scholastica

● Editorial project management, copyediting, and production support from Westchester

● XML, HTML, and print-ready PDF production through Westchester or Scholastica

● Journal website hosting options (portfolio or individual) through SPC or Scholastica

● Subscription management, sales, and customer service support through SPC

Publishers can choose to work with any or all of the Allied partners based on their needs, benefiting from coordinated workflow support that helps streamline handoffs across the journal publishing lifecycle.

“As more scholarly organizations explore independent publishing models to retain control over their journals, they need technology and operational support,” said Raymond Lambert, Publishing Services Manager at Duke University Press, which manages SPC. “We have solutions to some key parts of the puzzle at SPC, but we knew we needed to connect the rest, and we wanted to seek independent partners to work with who would offer flexibility and who were well known and well respected among nonprofit scholarly publishers. That led us to Scholastica and Westchester.”

The Allied model is particularly well-suited for scholarly organizations that want to explore more flexible alternatives to traditional publisher agreements for current publications or new journal launches, as well as nonprofit publishers seeking greater vendor choice and workflow control.
