The City’s Master Certificate Award Scheme
The Master Certificate Scheme, developed by Livery Companies in partnership with City
& Guilds, aims to recognise excellence in vocational education and training and
promote career progression from Apprentice to Master level. These recognise that the
person receiving the award has not only reached the appropriate requirement in
training and practice but has also individually contributed to their industry and supports
those working within it.
There are three levels of award demonstrating different points on a career
pathway:
Apprentice Certificate:
Candidates will typically be on an apprenticeship programme or equivalent and must
demonstrate the desire to become a Journeyman.
Journeyman Certificate: typically, with 4-5 years post training experience, holding an A
Level relevant qualification, showing evidence of mentoring and the desire to continue
with career development and progress to a Master.
Master Certificate: typically for those with at least 15 years relevant experience, active
links with current best practice, holding an A level or higher relevant qualification,
evidence of mentoring.
The Stationers’ Company’s participation in this scheme has been approved by The Livery
Companies Skills Council’s Strategy Group in January 2026.
