LivCom: It’s action stations at RAF wartime bunker

SIXTY feet below ground, preserved exactly as it was during the Battle of Britain 85 years ago, is the nerve centre of our air defence during World War II. The No. 11 Group Bunker at the former RAF Uxbridge in West London co-ordinated the fighter squadrons defending London and the South East, including the crucial Battle of Britain and D-Day operations.

Schedule

This private one-hour guided tour will take you back in time, presenting the sights and sounds of wartime action. Descending 76 steps to the operations room,  you will see the original plotting table and squadron status board, set as they were on 15 September 1940.

The pressure and drama of wartime come to life – and you may even see Winston Churchill there, puffing on his cigar.

Above ground, a modern visitor centre explains Britain’s pioneering air-defence system through interactive displays and real artefacts, with galleries on the Polish airmen and aircrew’s personal stories. Full-size Spitfire and Hurricane replicas, a café and gift shop complete the experience. Tour starts at noon, so time for lunch afterwards!

Please note: There is no lift so you need to be able to climb back up the 76 steps.

Cost per person is £30, and all profits go to the Hall charity.

How to book: There is a limit of 40 people on the tour so early booking is advised. To reserve places, email Dave Rosewell as soon as possible daverosewell@icloud.com

Getting there: the nearest station is Uxbridge (Metropolitan and Piccadilly) lines, about a 15-minute, one-mile walk through Dowding Park. Several buses serve nearby stops, and there’s free car parking for visitors though the site is within the ULEZ zone.
