Scammed! Who can we trust? Brands? Media? Big Tech? Governments?
In 2025, trust is more fragile—and more critical—than ever. From the rise of AI-generated content to the erosion of faith in institutions, the question of who and what we can trust dominates global discourse. This year’s Trilivery event will explore the multifaceted nature of trust in the modern era, examining how technology, media, brands, and culture shape our perceptions of credibility.
We’ll dive into the challenges of misinformation, the role of fact-checkers like BBC Verify, and the ethical dilemmas posed by AI in creative industries. We’ll also explore how businesses and public services maintain trust amid failure, and what it takes for leaders to rebuild confidence in times of crisis. With a mix of expert insights, real-world examples, and thought-provoking debate, this event will enlighten attendees about the challenges navigating trust in our increasingly complex world.
The debate will be chaired by Paul Connew. Paul Connew is a media commentator and broadcaster on political, media and social issues for a number of UK channels, including the BBC, Sky, GBNews, Talk TV, LBC. He also appears on Australian, US and Canadian TV and has worked with Netflix on documentary projects.
Connew is a former editor of the Sunday Mirror, deputy editor of the Daily Mirror and deputy editor of the News of The World. He was also a US Bureau Chief for the Mirror Group and is co-author of 14 books on the mainstream and social media and politics, the lastest of which is 'Pandering to Populism?: Journalism and Politics in a Post-Truth Age?'. Paul is also a columnist for the media industry publication In-Publishing.
Joining Paul Connew on the panel are:
Victoria Baines is Professor Emerita of IT and current Visiting Professor of Technology in Society at Gresham College. Her most recent series of lectures focuses on the prehistory of IT. She is currently producing a series of documentaries on the intersection of technology and politics, the arts, and the environment. Her areas of research include digital ethics, electronic surveillance, cybercrime, and the politics of security. She also provides research expertise to a number of international organisations including Interpol, the United Nations, the Council of Europe and the European Commission. For several years Victoria was Facebook’s Trust & Safety Manager for EMEA. Prior to this, Victoria led the Strategy team at Europol’s European Cybercrime Centre (EC3), where she was responsible for the EU’s cyber threat analysis, and the ground-breaking cybersecurity futures exercise, Project 2020.
Emily Somers is an entrepreneurial, customer-led Senior Marketer, with a rare blend of agency pedigree and executive-level client experience. Her career spans top creative agencies, the BBC’s in-house creative team and senior leadership roles at well-loved brands like McDonald’s, Domino’s Pizza and Deliveroo.
Building and retaining customer trust has been a central tenet in all these roles, especially during her time at McDonald’s, where the brand often sits in the firing line of public scrutiny. During her tenure, Emily led a wholesale re-think of the brand trust strategy, a menu reformulation and innovation programme and worked with the government on the ‘nudge’ strategy to encourage people to make healthier food choices. She now consults for a range of PE-backed scale-ups and start-ups, helping them sharpen their brand, marketing, and creative strategies for growth.
Throughout her career, Emily has championed authenticity, integrity, and customer obsession. She believes creative thinking unlocks commercial success and builds lasting brand value. She is a proud member of WACL (Women in Advertising and Communications Leadership).
