On Boxing Day in 2022, renowned novelist, screenwriter and playwright Hanif Kureishi fell while in Rome. After coming to in a pool of blood, he realised he had lost the use of his limbs. Shattered is his memoir of the aftermath, a year spent in a series of hospital wards in Italy and London as he came to terms with his disability, built around fragments dictated to family members at the time. He discusses his account of a life shattered and then reassembled with author and Guardian theatre critic Arifa Akba.
