MIDDLE TEMPLE AND THE WORLD: A MOLYNEUX GLOBES STUDY DAY

5 SEPTEMBER 2025

Middle Temple and the World: A Molyneux Globes Study Day

Find out how early modern Europeans saw the world in this exciting study day, taking place at Middle Temple Library on  Staturday,11th October.

The Library of the Honourable Society of Middle Temple contains a unique pair of early 17th century globes - one terrestrial and one celestial – and an exceptional collection of early modern books.

This one-day workshop will bring together experts in early modern travel writing, globes and rare books to deliver a range of sessions about the globes, early modern travel books, and the print trade. Attendees will have the chance to visit the Library (which is not normally open to the public) and see the globes, as well as handle some of the rare books in the Library’s collection that relate to travel of the period.

The morning will comprise two sessions that will set the scene for the afternoon workshops. They will cover topics such as travel in the period, geography, globe- and map-making and an introduction to early modern printed books. One afternoon workshop will focus on the globes and the other will be a hands-on session inspecting and handling some of the rare 16th and 17th century books in the Middle Temple Library collection.
